2 years of lectures presented at Unigrad College, followed by an 18 month practical component.

About this programme
This two year programme in Graphic Design presented at the Unigrad College will equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary to work in a variety of creative fields in South Africa and abroad.  The programme has been designed to introduce you to the dynamic and revolutionised world of multi-media and design.

During your studies you will focus on a variety of design disciplines including web, animation and graphic design.  Our small classes allow personal interaction that enables the fostering of a trusting lecturer/student relationship in an environment that promotes participation, self-discipline, motivation and excellence. 

Certification on successful completion of studies
Students write national examinations set and administered by the Department of Higher Education (DHET).  Successful students will achieve the following:

  • National Certificate: N4 Art and Design (SAQA ID# 66831; NQF Level 5)
  • National Certificate: N5 Art and Design (SAQA ID# 66915; NQF Level 5)
  • National Certificate: N6 Art and Design (SAQA ID# 66994; NQF Level 5)
  • National N Diploma: Art and Design (SAQA ID# 67031; NQF Level 6) on completion of N4 – N6 and 18 months or 2000 hours relevant practical experience
  • Unigrad Short Learning Programme Certificate in Graphic Design Fundamentals
  • Unigrad Short Learning Programme Certificate in Web Design 1 (Fundamentals)

  DIGITAL DESIGN APPLICATIONS

  • Introduction to software packages to produce effective digital work
  • Develop skills using Adobe Creative Suite programmes which includes Photoshop, Illustrator and CorelDraw
  • Develop the idea generation process and application there of Mounting to present projects of an excellent standard
     

   DRAWING I

  • Drawing as a visual language and descriptive medium
  • Communicate through the art of drawing
  • Analyse the use of drawing media, materials and techniques
  • Elements of art and design principles
     

  ENTREPENEURSHIP

  • Business creativity and idea generation
  • Marketing fundamentals and evaluation of business plan
  • Introduction to management ­­entrepreneurship
     

   GRAPHIC DESIGN I

  • Introduction to fundamental graphic design processes
  • Communicate ideas and concepts though creative thinking methods
  • Application of design and typographic practice to print and digital mediums
  • Industry relevant assignments and Adobe Creative Suite applications
  • Plan a project using the design development cycle
     

   3D DESIGN I

  • Introduction to basic 3D design and concepts
  • Develop packaging design
  • Introduction to 3DS (Studio) Max software

 

  GRAPHIC DESIGN II & III (including Web Design)
  • Solving visual problems from initial concept through to final design
  • Application of Adobe Creative Suite to industry relevant assignments
  • Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Flash and Audition
  • Communicate meanings, messages and information using visual language
  • Application of corporate identity
  • Advertising in the industry
  • Develop and present a professional portfolio in an appropriate format
  • Web design (design and visual elements) and HTML coding
     

  3D DESIGN II & III

  • Development of 3D design
  • Design 3D concepts
  • 3D Environment focused on modeling, materials and camera work
     

  DRAWING II & III

  • Spatial characteristics of line and texture to create images and “illusion”
  • Develop an original style and content of drawing
  • Compiling a professional drawing portfolio
     

  HISTORY OF ART I & II

  • Critical and reasoning skills
  • Visual analyses of art
  • Knowledge of art terminology
  • Art works of different eras, cultures and societies
