FULL-TIMENational N Diploma: Engineering Studies (Mechanical)Lectures start 17 February 2025 (Orientation week 11 - 14 February)

What is Mechanical Engineering?

This programme covers areas in the design, development, and operation of machinery, from basic to complex systems. Students gain an understanding of the principles and processes involved in creating and maintaining machines.  This knowledge enables mechanical engineers to design, analyse, and optimize mechanical processes, driving innovation and efficiency in manufacturing and operations, and supporting organizational goals.

This diversity makes Mechanical Engineering an exciting and challenging field, with opportunities to work on projects that transform communities and improve people’s lives.

Certification on successful completion of studies:

Students write national examinations set and administered by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).  Certificates and diplomas are conferred by the DHET which are nationally recognized and internationally relevant.  Successful students graduate with the following:

5
National Certificate: N4 Engineering Studies (SAQA ID 66881)
5
National Certificate: N5 Engineering Studies (SAQA ID 66960)
5
National Certificate: N6 Engineering Studies (SAQA ID 67005)

National Diploma: Engineering Studies (67043), NQF Level 6

To qualify, you must successfully achieve the N4, N5 & N6 certificates and gain at least 2 years of work experience (a minimum of 2,670 hours) in an engineering environment. Once you’ve completed these steps, your logbook will be submitted to the DHET for review, marking the final step in your journey to becoming fully qualified.

Admission requirements

You need to have achieved ONE of the following:

  • Grade 12 with Mathematics and Physical Science
  • N3 Engineering Certificate

Programme Duration

2 years of full-time weekday classes (N4, N5 & N6). National N Diploma requires 2 years (2670 hours) of practical experience, after completing N4 – N6.

Subjects

  • Mechanotechnics N4, N5 & N6
  • Engineering Science N4
  • Mechanical Draughting N4
  • Mechanical Drawing and Design N5 & N6
